When People Say “We Have Made It Through Worse Before”
all I hear is the wind slapping against all the gravestones
of those who did not make it, those who did not
survive to see the confetti fall from the sky, those who
did not live to watch the parade roll down the street.
I have grown accustomed to a lifetime of aphorisms
meant to assuage my fears, pithy sayings meant
to convey that all ends up fine in the end. But there is
no solace in rearranging language to make a different word
tell the same lie. Sometimes the moral arc of the universe
does not bend in a direction that comforts us.
Sometimes it bends in ways we don’t expect and there are
people who fall off in the process. Please, dear reader,
do not say that I am hopeless. I believe there is a better future
to fight for, I simply accept the possibility that I may not
live to see it. I have grown weary of telling myself lies
that I might one day begin to believe. We are not all left
standing after the war has ended. Some of us have
become ghosts by the time the dust has settled.

Well, the weekend is over, phew!
Dinner last Friday went off very well. The restaurant/hotel was splendidly organised, and our tables were ready when Beast and I arrived at four thirty to check in to our room and get started. My lovely assistants also arrived early, and between us we had the roundels hung on the side sconces and the table centrepieces sorted *and* the flags alphabetised by six, so we went back to our room to change. At six twenty-eight I realised I had forgotten to pack my pills, so I drove back to fetch them. Was back by... I think five to seven, to find lots of early guests milling about and table places being claimed with flags—the restaurant had splendidly arranged napkins into fans, with an addition paper napkin in gold, very fitting, and an excellent place to set up a flag.
Dinner was tasty, service was better than the usual style we get, which involves waiters trotting about brandishing dishes and asking who wants them: this lot went round and made a list of each course for each table, using the flags.
We had the entertainment session after dessert, as usual. My chorus sang well, and my quartet—one whole week after our first rehearsal—acquitted ourselves nicely. I was the MC (as well as chief decorator and arranger of fun stuff), but it worked out okay, and I also read my Modern Day Matilda poem. It was, in fact, a very pleasant evening, pretty much everything worked as intended, and I think my augmentations of asking them to wear something gold, actual themed decorations, fun little certificates to be given out, including Best Dressed Gent and Lady, and even the meal-choice flags, all added to the atmosphere. Thank goodness!
Even one oblivious chap rolling up five minutes after the set dinner time, without having signed up in advance, picked his menu choices, or paid, didn't matter, because the restaurant staff found him a seat and food without any difficulty. Excellent stuff.

On Sunday, we both attended the 50th Anniversary Charity Concert, which was mostly Fine City Chorus (men) but a little bit mixed chorus as well. They guys sang beautifully, and it raised a little over £1,500 for Emmaus, which was an excellent and very satisfactory result.

And this week I am running a belated Macmillan Coffee Morning. Wot I could not possibly have coped with last Friday!

My lovely assistants also arrived early, and between us we had the roundels hung on the side sconces and the table centrepieces sorted *and* the flags alphabetised by six, so we went back to our room to change. At six twenty-eight I realised I had forgotten to pack my pills, so I drove back to fetch them. Was back by... I think five to seven, to find lots of early guests milling about and table places being claimed with flags—the restaurant had splendidly arranged napkins into fans, with an addition paper napkin in gold, very fitting, and an excellent place to set up a flag.
Dinner was tasty, service was better than the usual style we get, which involves waiters trotting about brandishing dishes and asking who wants them: this lot went round and made a list of each course for each table, using the flags.
We had the entertainment session after dessert, as usual. My chorus sang well, and my quartet—one whole week after our first rehearsal—acquitted ourselves nicely. I was the MC (as well as chief decorator and arranger of fun stuff), but it worked out okay, and I also read my Modern Day Matilda poem. It was, in fact, a very pleasant evening, pretty much everything worked as intended, and I think my augmentations of asking them to wear something gold, actual themed decorations, fun little certificates to be given out, including Best Dressed Gent and Lady, and even the meal-choice flags, all added to the atmosphere. Thank goodness!
Even one oblivious chap rolling up five minutes after the set dinner time, without having signed up in advance, picked his menu choices, or paid, didn't matter, because the restaurant staff found him a seat and food without any difficulty. Excellent stuff.

On Sunday, we both attended the 50th Anniversary Charity Concert, which was mostly Fine City Chorus (men) but a little bit mixed chorus as well. They guys sang beautifully, and it raised a little over £1,500 for Emmaus, which was an excellent and very satisfactory result.

And this week I am running a belated Macmillan Coffee Morning. Wot I could not possibly have coped with last Friday!

I had restless leg syndrome as a symptom during Covid
I had covid once, in April 2022 I think, and I had restless leg syndrome for the first time in my life during that infection. It was EXTREMELY uncomfortable - I couldn't sleep properly, and I mostly couldn't feel comfortable at all sitting up, but I also could not stop moving my legs almost constantly. I think I settled on weakly bicycling them. But since the rest of my symptoms approximated a severe flu, it also sort of blended into the background nightmare and I don't remember it very clearly.
That was the first time I ever had RLS, and I only know the name because I was googling the symptom at the time. Apparently it was a known symptom of that variant, or that's what the net told me at the time.
Well, I just had it for the SECOND time ever last night!
I fell asleep at midnight, and I guess I was awake with physical discomfort, verging on actual pain, from about 2 am to 7 am when I got up to give the cats their breakfast. It was a bit like the discomfort of a limb that's going to cramp or go to sleep in a bad position, but moving only eased it for a moment, so I was tossing and turning and only managed to sleep fitfully once during that, dreaming that I had RLS. After I fed the cats at 7 I microwaved a wheat pillow and when I went back to bed I put it on my thighs, which enabled me to fall asleep finally. Then, of course, I overslept.
Wax says that she gets RLS sometimes, but a mild version that doesn't bother her as much, and that it's apparently a known symptom of menopause?! Wow, I hate that.
And like so many problems, unfortunately, the most effective recommendations for managing it are all stuff like regular good sleep hygiene and good exercise habits, and it's like yeah I know, I'm TRYING! That, and maybe iron might help.

Built to last.
Because it's the world we live in, I got a virtual consultation on my wallet today. There's an assortment of leather repair shops in New York City, and they now offer the option of having someone check out a piece through video conferencing rather than legging it out to Midtown. My wallet's been getting fairly ragged for a while, so I figured it was time to look into seeing if it could be fixed. It turns out, not so much. The guy took one look at it and said that it probably wasn't possible, given the overall wear and weathering and and rips at the seams, and even fixing up the seams would be difficult. He gave a timetable of several days, if not weeks, and a price point of a few hundred dollars.
The thing about this wallet that's got me considering that price and timetable is that this is my wallet. To be clear, this is my only wallet. To be even more precise, this is still my first wallet. It's the wallet my parents bought for me when I'd have been five or six, old enough to be trusted with one. To illustrate how long I've had it, it's got the address and phone number of the house I grew up in. My hometown changed its area codes in 1997, and the number in my wallet has the old area code. When I told the leather guy I'd had it for at least 30 years, I wasn't exaggerating.
Besides the sheer emotional attachment to this thing, it's also a good wallet. It's got a clear slot for emergency contact information, it's got an ID pocket, it's got six thin credit card sleeves and a larger pocket for a few more, it's got a lot of room for bills, and it's got a coin purse. A coin purse! With a clasp! A coin purse with two pockets, one I use for pennies and one I use for all the other coins to make exact change that much easier to manage. That's not a feature on most modern wallets. It's barely a feature on vintage wallets, at least going by what's being offered on eBay.
A few hundred dollars to fix this would still be getting my money's worth out of this wallet. I'm also thinking that given I've had this over thirty years, it might be time to buy a second wallet for a good deal less than a few hundred dollars. Provided, that is, I can find one that's also capable of doing what this one does. Hopefully with all the same features, ideally for at least another thirty years.

still not up to deep thoughts
So:
• the uncle who had the infection is starting to recover, and you can tell bc he’s getting more stubborn and ornery with my mom and her sisters and the workers at the assisted living center. He also took a bad fall and needed stitches in the middle of the night last Monday night / Tuesday morning.
• I keep forgetting words lately, bc sinus headaches, and I keep wanting to call the assisted living center “the old people warehouse”. Which is wildly inappropriate, but also kinda accurate. 🤷
• I’m now wishing I had done more to recommend the other old people warehouse that seemed to have their shit together. The current place did eventually find most of his laundry … but they are in breach of contract on multiple matters, and we’re none of us impressed with them.
• school is school. In Pathology, we’re in the nervous system chapter. One of my classmates was telling the teacher how glad she was that she didn’t have any of these conditions and I kinda wanted to turn to the chapter condition list and go, “I’ve had this one and this one and I still have that one and this one …” I didn’t, but boy howdy I wanted to.
• I have been invited out to WA, where my besties are living, for the time either before or after the midwinter holidays, depending on Covid spike numbers and how done I am with the clinical practice hours for school. I’m due to graduate before the middle of the month, but a lot of factors might go into my getting out there to see people (and sleep 111 hours). I will definitely need a week off after graduation.

Nescafe Advertisment - While this is a canonical fandom on AO3, it’s under review to be renamed, so we’ll approve this as Nescafe "Arctica" | "Polar Explorers" Advertisments (Russia) which is the likely new name. However, we’d like more information on the characters. We’re not sure which of the men is “First Polar” and which is “Second Polar”; some works in the fandom use Ivanov and Petrov. Also, we haven’t seen a polar bear in the 3 ads we’ve found - can you link us to the one that has the polar bear, please?

2025 Fall Anime Season Preview + 2026 Anime
This is probably the shortest fall anime season preview I've written. There are lots of sequels this season. The nostalgia trend continues with a reboot of Cat's Eye (the first episode is already out) and the second season of Ranma 1/2. Disney Twisted Wonderland Season 1 will finally be out at the end of October.
